Sun in hydrogen alpha light

The filtering used in this photo is very special. If you could visualize the visible spectrum as being about the length of a football field, this filter would eliminate all colors except a very narrow band about ½" wide in the red portion of the spectrum.  

The feature on the top edge of the Sun is called a prominence, while the crab shape on the surface is a flare.
